We arrived at the Cosby campsite that same day and the weather there was good. We figured on staying for a relaxing three days. However, the next day broke with heavy rain — sigh. We elected to head into Pigeon Forge and shop the day away as there are a (horrible) number of factory outlets taking advantage of the close proximity of ‘DollyWood’ — yuck! At least it passed the time.
The Cosby campsite is away from the bustle of Gatlinberg and provides an excellent look at a climax forest on the quiet trails leading up to the main Appalachian Trail which winds through the park on the crest of the Smokey Mountains. During the later summer and early fall months the nights (if they are damp and warm) are alive and noisy with the sound of a gazillion tree frogs.
