Departing Cloudland Canyon, we headed north to Nashville. On the way, we stopped in at the Stones River Battlefield. Stones River (or sometimes 2nd Murfreesboro) was another battle fought between Rosecrans and Bragg, but earlier than Chickamauga. Rosecrans was marching out of Nashville to force Bragg out of Tennessee but Bragg struck him first. Bragg ultimately failed and was forced to vacate Tennessee.

There were a couple of very interesting stops on the (car) tour of the Battlefield. Below, shows the route we took to Nashville and some photos taken of the park.

Troops dug in atop this hill faced the enemy coming up the hill to dislodge them.A walk way along the line of battle for one of the engagements in this battle. Troops on the left were attacking troops dug in on the right among the forest and a well chosen set of rocks.The defending troops were dug in among these flat rocks which offered excellent protection and allowed sharp shooters to defend against much larger numbers.
