With just a brief visit to Devil’s Tower, we continued through the Black Hills of Dakota to the Badlands.

The Badlands are a spectacular erosion feature. The soil in the area is the result of volcanic activity to the west and easterly winds that carried huge amounts of ash to the area in the Paleocene era. The soil has a small layer of grassland protecting it and where that protection has been lost, tremendous erosion takes place.
