It was time for our ferry ride. Off to Fort Sumter we went in the late afternoon. Sumter if famous for the ‘opening’ blows of the Civil War. As a matter of course, it has a Civil war museum on-site and a bookstore (very modest and small, but a definite hit with the tourists looking for a memento). It’s a must stop for a Civil War buff (e.g. me), but as battlefield monuments go, it’s not the most interesting. Of course, the fort isn’t very special save in the role it played in the ‘kickoff’ event and the interesting story behind some of the characters involved.
