The SC Aquarium is intended to showcase all of the animal life in South Carolina from the sea coast, to the lowlands and black-water rivers, and up into the highlands near the Appalachian mountains. We spend a few hours touring the facility and taking a couple of ‘special’ tours to talk with animal curators and see the back-end feeding facilities.

Cathy had a good look at the owl and was able to speak to the handler at some length.While Cathy was busy with the owl, Peter and I were watching the Eagle up close and peronal.Some fine Carolina Rattle snakes.Our friend, the alligator. We only saw one of these in the wild -- near Savanah. These guys are in a tank!The Lion Fish (Salt Water).Salt water reef life.Some jelly fish -- salt water. They are in a special tank to make them particularly visible to folks.This is the Business end of the Aquarium. Yep, all those animals need to be fed and it is quite the production. The process a LOT of food every day.The very top of the tall tank. This was part of the back-end tour and not generally open to the public. They feed all the fish (and turtles) in the big tank from the top. They can use divers to deliver food or lower baskets to the appropriate strata of the tank.The main tank at the aquarium is about 40 feet high. It shows various strata of marine life. Here we are near the bottom.
