While in the Savannah area, we took a tour of Fort Pulaski. Perhaps not as famous as Sumter, but much more interesting. Pulaski is among a set of Federal Forts established to protect the east coast of the US against invasion. The design includes: isolation on an island in the middle of the Savannah River; a large earth embankment on the seaward side to protect against naval bombardment; a landward wedge to provided enfilading support to prevent infantry attack on the fort; and, of course, cannon all-around!
